Analysis of Pepe, and use as a Meme

Why does pepe work so well? Why has it granted so much success? What intrinsic values is it defined by? These things need to be defined in order to replicate the success that have been collectively achieved so far.

I’ll define pepe: It’s more than just a frog. It’s means by which an individual can reject shaming by others for expressing views outside of the Overton window (The Overton window, also known as the window of discourse, is the range of ideas the public will accept.)

Here’s an example: Let’s say you call someone a ‘fag’ online. They respond with ‘How can you be so homophobic?’  You have obviously violated their moral code. ‘Faggot’ and any attempts at defining homosexuality as negative will likely cause this person to attempt to shame you. There is a stigma around being anti-gay, or anti-LGBT they are trying to push on you. You respond with a “Smug Pepe” a cartoon frog with a smug look on its face. You have removed their ability to shame you. They have no power over you, no methods of leveraging their position because your guilt has been removed by a Smug pepe. This pepe is a wordless thought, an easy one, that does not appear with words. It speaks directly to the subconscious. ‘Fuck you’ it says. ‘No’.

There are three parts to the conscious & subconscious, The Id, the Ego, and the Superego. the id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual trends; the super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role; and the ego is the organized, realistic part that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego. Pepe interferes with the shame and guilt caused by this person attempting to stigmatize your use of the slur ‘faggot’ which I have described above. It removes the shame and contributes to the replication of your anti-faggotry.
