The truth is Trump just knows how to meme. Exposure and repetition in trumps memes where something he understood from a young age. Also, he used something known a the mirror exposure technique, where people develop a preference for familiar things. Memes are like a virus in the fact that they are more successful with the more exposure they get. Ideas can’t spread on there own they need a host for them to spread, which instead of how a virus needs a living host, a meme needs an active form of communication. Ideas are easier for many people to manage when they are broken up into a form that is similar and easier to understand.

Trump as a businessman, put his name on everything. It was one of his business objectives to build his name as part of his company. Brands if you think of it, are just memes. “Soda” is a vague name for a drink, but you say “Coca Cola” people recognize what you are talking about and even picture the logo and what it tastes like. It also helps Trump that his name is a verb meaning to do better or over come your enemy.

In 1978 Trump commissioned Trump towers, in Manhattan. Manhattan was the financial and cultural center of New York City. One of the largest cities in the US. Manhattan also has globally renown landmark, like the Empire State Building, Time Square, The World Trade Center, and now Trump Towers. It made people wonder who this was.

Today, the internet is the most primary way memes are spread. In the eighties, network television was how memes spread. ABC, CBS, and NBC all had headquarters in Manhattan. NYC at the time was mass media headquarters for the United States. This media was used by Trump to turn him from a businessman to celebrity. He started out making TV appearances talking about his business, then he did cameos, advertisements, and even had his own TV shows. Donald Trump made himself interesting to the American public. For him it was more important what he was, than who he was.

Donald Trump is also known to have changed his political party many times. Many people would look at this as one of his flaws, but it does make sense, if you look at it from the right angle. He always seemed to be contrarian to what ever political party, the president was. He was playing into a theory called the political pendulum. Since Bush senior every president won the election twice, and then the opposite party would win the next. Also, it was important to note that in 2015 most of the republican voters were older, and so was Donald Trump’s fan base.

The internet changed everything. Information was more accessible than ever, but truth was harder to distinguish. Celebrities and businessmen had more scrutiny in this modern age, but the memes had more power. In recent history most presidents where remember by a meme. Two presidents who are the most remembered are Franklin Roosevelt, and JFK. They both had new ways to communicate with the public. FDR had the first radio broadcast as presidents, and JFK was the first president to use television to address the public.

Donald Trump had the internet and twitter. It was his biggest strength, and his biggest weakness. It opened him up to scrutiny more than any other presidential candidate. He would make the most unfiltered, and bold state tweets, this made him known to the world. Twitter is great for spreading memes, with features like retweets, trending tweets, and low word counts on tweets. There are two things that spread the quickest on twitter it’s controversy and memes. Donald Trump was going to make controversial memes. He was going to use a theory called weaponized memes. This theory has been around for some time, but no one thought anyone could use it to become the president of a country. Trump even mentioned some of the techniques of meme in his book art of the deal.

Trump political career started in 2011, with him making controversy about Obamas birth certificates. During Obamas 2012 election he double down on Obama, bringing up everything he could. Trump didn’t let up for 3 years. On June 15, 2015, Donald Trump announced his campaign for president. He made a 45-minute-long speech, but only two things stood out: Building the wall, and Make America Great Again.

No one in the media took him seriously when Trump first announced running for president. He was ridiculed online and in the mainstream media. It was some of the best memeing leading to him becoming a talking piece overnight. Everyone was talking about building the wall and debating about making America great. His campaign had a good offensive side, and a good defensive side. His offense was building the wall. It’s controversial and steers attention towards trump. Make America great again is good for defense because it vague and deflect negative attention. It is also one of the easiest political points to support.

Politics are complicated an most people don’t have the time, are lazy, or are too stupid to understand politics. Most political messages portrayed by candidates are too complicated to understand. Trump used memes to make his political messaged simpler and easier to understand. For the next eighteen-month Trump throttled the media, with quips and memes. The media tried to do all they could do to destroy trump. Something that Trump did that was smart was every week he gave them a new controversy every week. All his controversies just seemed to drift into the background. The only things that stuck where his name, MAGA, and build the wall. When the media was trying to destroy him, he got free publicity. Controversy overshadowed his biggest weakness, his lack of political experience.

When he entered the field, he had sixteen other candidates he was running against in the republican party. He overshadow them with all this free publicity. It turned into Trump vs. the field. He also went so far as to give the other Republican nick names like “Week Jeb,” “Lion Ted,” and “Little Mario.” Trump took the Republican party by storm. Not only that, he managed to unite the party. After that it was Trump vs Hilary. Trump had better memes. Even Hilary’s campaign slogan was “Love Trumps Hate.” That slogan even has Trumps name in it. Talk about free advertising.

The rest is history.
